I can almost taste it it's that close. The snowdrops are out in the woods, the air is mild and the anticipation of a new start is everywhere. Baxter's doing great. Fully house trained and dead good. No chewing, biting or any other mischief. Cant believe how much i'm enjoying our walks. Tramping through the woods, ipod on, scalve up to my chin, heavy coat on and Baxter's energy bouncing off me. He's taken years (and pounds) off me Smiling

Isn't it funny how we wish for a 'happy' new year, just goes to show the majority arnt even though we usually plod along in our daily lives pretending to be... I have no high hopes for 2007, i think i've reached a point where i accept life is going to continue to throw shit at me and the way i deal with it is what matters. I always dread the new year, its high expectations, its pressures to quit smoking, diet, excercise, be good and the hint of hope it sprinkles in our psyche that things could get better even though deep down you know it only will if you make those drastic changes that hang over you like a shadow of discontent, the ones you focus on burying so they dont upset the apple cart. Today i cried, then cried some more.. not sure why.. maybe the relief i've survived another year, or the realization 2006 just added more weight and depth to my scars. Life.. it's a funny old game

My review of Rudebox - The Album by Robbie Williams
Out on general release 23rd October 2006

'It is a brave artist who steps out of their comfort zone and attempts to do something truly new, so credit is due to Robbie Williams for being different'' Quote: Music Week

Can you compare Rudebox the album to other works of Robbie Williams? The answer is a clear no. He stated he wished to experiment, go back to his roots and asked fans to trust him on this one.

Unwittingly i did have certain expectations before listening to this album, i expected Robbie Williams flare, i expected to be taken back to the techno 1980's, the era i 'grew up' who's music i still adore today. I expected to like it all on the first listening, as i did all his previous albums... on these expectations i was let down... probably my own fault for 'expecting' something different to what i got.... Nevertheless i did get something new from my favourate artist and originality is always a good thing. Whether i liked this new material is a different matter... here's my individual breakdown

1. Rudebox
Rudebox grew and grew on me. Its amazing performed live, catchy and shows the 'street' side of Rob that he'll never lose, no matter how or where he now lives his life. The streets have changed alot since the 80's and Rob's days in Stoke. I don't think for one minute that he's intouch with the 'streets' of 2006 and for this reason Rudebox does lack the urban honesty of today that makes rap so good. It kinda reminds me of early Will Smith raps, he being an intelligent guy, living a life of luxuary in Bellair while pumping out bubble gum pop aimed at the youngsters on the 'street' - it didnt work for Will.........

2. Viva Life On Mars
Can't stop thinking of 'cotton eyed joe' when listening to this, but its definatly above and beyond that particular track.

3. Lovelight
A cover of the criminally underknown Lewis Taylor's Lovelight. Its fresh, its pop, its smooth, the vocals are mature, sexy and the video is cool. Reminds me of Jamiroquai, a young George Michael and a drop of soul legends Luther Van Dross and George Benson. I love this and i'm sure it will be a massive hit.

4. Bongo Bong and Je Ne T'aime Plus
I like the fun lyrics and beat behind this song and i can imagine it will be great performed live. Its quirky and catchy even though there's no real meaning or message behind the lyrics. Its a great album track but i doubt it would make a hit single. Reminds me of the Jungle Book song that never made it onto the disney film as its was deemed unfit for child consumption. Lily Allen - urgh - don't know why but i just really dislike her imput. She hit the UK with an originality i admired but then she opened her mouth and slated her peers which just put me right off her.

5. She's Madonna
Very cheesey bit of celebrity gossip. Tongue in cheek, fun and catchy.

6. Keep On
Really dont like this one, Lily Allen's touch just tarnishes it for me, again its personal opinion because i just dont like her vocals. But i dont think her reggae influence blends well with the music or Rob's rap. It appears to me to be like a bad mash up of one of her tunes, one of robs new raps and a PSB track - its all over the place, annoying and not one that will find its way onto my iPod.

7. Good Doctor
One of my favorite tracks from this new album. Its open and honest and shows someone trying to deal with their ups and downs with alittle humour thrown into the mix -Pure Robbie and surely great performed live.

8. The Actor
A satrical song about the movie business. Very PSB's in style, very frank about the falseness of the 'business'. I like it

9. Never Touch That Switch
Not sure on this. The lyrics are angry but the music is great. I like the electro but does it work with the rap?

10. Louise
This is the song i was most disappointed in. Being a huge Human League fan i hoped Rob would have caught the raw tones of Phil Oakey's voice as he spun the sorry tale of love and loss through the song. Although Rob's vocals are great i do miss the sense of this having actually happened - the truth seems to have been lost and the feeling behind the lyrics just arnt there. Ontop of this the backing music is terrible. It does rather sound like someones sat in their bedroom copying the tune on a crappy yamaha keyboard.

11.We're The Pet Shop Boys
A very fitting and deserved tribute to the greatness of the Pet Shop Boys. It kinda takes pieces from all their greatest hits and pours it into one song blessed with Robbies amazing vocals. If there was ever a third member of the PSB Robbie is it. His voice blends perfectly with the heavy electro PSB beats as if they were written with him in mind, somehow the PSB's lyrics come more alive when Rob sings them, not that i dont love Neil Tarrant's tone, but Rob sounds so at home there.

12. Burslem Normals
Really love this tune. It reminds me of his B sides, always great, always reliable, always Robbie Williams. Its soft, gentle and reminds me of what it was like growing up in the 80's. All those expectations we had yet we had no idea how to get there but we were certain there were different paths to choose.

13. Kiss Me
The cover of writing partner Stephen Duffy's classic Kiss Me. One of the dancefloor favorites of the 1980's. Although i already love Rob's version i still prefer my 12inch extended remix version of Duffy's hit. I prefer the dramatic backing on Duffy's version, the beat, for me has more flare and gives his version the edge over Rob's.

14. 80's
Reminds me of Ian Dury raps but overly done and more camp. Great lyrics, catchy, fun but no hit single. You get a glimpse of the young Robbie as he recalls times gone by with an amazing, vivid memory. Brought back so much for me. This is one that i find myself playing over and over again.

15. 90's
Great tune, again a camp version of those old Ian Dury raps but without the hostility and hate Dury seemed to expell alot. I see this as a dreamy memory of a time in someones life that's still blurry around the edges and only the strongest memories have survived, but unfortunatly these memories seem to be the more negative ones from that time.

16. Summertime
I adore this song. It reminds me of someone trying so hard to put on a 'front' when deep inside they are hurting. Summertime connotes the time in your life where everything is fruitful and blossomed, happy and gay, a time where you're having the time of your life but underneath there's the knowledge that soon this will all fall off, whither and die as autumn follows. Its like someone cant enjoy the moment because they know it wont last as long as its wanted to last. Beautifully written, Robbie at his best.

17. Dickhead
A very immature and angry rap. Maybe i'm getting old but this just doesnt appeal to me and is something i would not play in the car as my kids could listen. Alot of bitterness in here and the 'dont give a fuck' is obviously wrong - or why else write about whatever message you're trying to get across. Whatever it is Rob, let it go. Bitterness eats away at you.

As you can tell i have mixed feelings on this new album, i love some tracks, hate others, and still really undecided on a few.

It shocked me, it'll appeal to people who wouldnt have dreamt of buying a Robbie Williams album, and it might put off a few who have always done so.

Again he's been true to himself and set out to do what he wanted, he'sproud of it, i enjoy quite a bit of it yet deep within me i am missing the pop, the flare and the born entertainer that is Robbie Williams but a change is as good as a rest Winking
